Poker: How to play Texas Hold’em

Most of our titles feature Texas Hold’em poker, one of the most popular variants of the game. The game was invented in Robstown, Texas, in the early 1900s. Here’s how you play it:

Poker blinds and the ante

Players take turns dealing the cards clockwise, and the two players left of the dealer must each place a forced bet: the small blind and the big blind. The ante is a forced contribution from all players, and the blinds and antes gradually increase during the game to raise the pressure.

Poker: dealing the cards

Each player is dealt two cards (hole cards). Look at your cards and decide if you want to place a bet or opt out (fold). Once all bets are placed, the dealer deals the flop: three face-up cards in the middle. Another round of betting follows, during which players can check or raise the bet. A fourth face-up card is added (the turn) and another betting round follows. After that, the fifth and last community card (the river) is dealt and the showdown can begin.

Poker hands

The player who can assemble the best 5-card poker hand wins the game. Listed from the most valuable to the least valuable, the poker hands are:

  • Royal Flush – cards from 10 to ace, all from the same suit
  • Straight Flush – an unbroken sequence of five cards (e.g. 3-4-5-6-7) of the same suit
  • Four of a Kind – four cards of the same value, the higher the more valuable (e.g. 4 aces)
  • Full House – three of a kind plus one pair
  • Flush – five random cards from the same suit
  • Straight – an unbroken sequence of five cards, but not from the same suit
  • Three of a kind – three cards of the same value, the higher the more valuable
  • Two Pairs
  • Pair – two cards of the same value
  • High card – if no player can make any poker hand combinations, the player holding the card with the highest value wins
